The opposition has called for the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the recent sugar scandal, citing large-scale corruption and alleged misuse of national resources.
Speaking outside the Parliament House, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Asad Qaiser has demanded an independent inquiry through a judicial commission into what he described as serious financial misconduct in the sugar sector.
Qaiser alleged that "significant corruption" had occurred, adding that immediate action must be taken against those responsible for plundering public funds. He asserted that whether bureaucrats or others, all those who caused damage to the national treasury should face accountability.
Criticising the sentences handed to opposition leaders, Qaiser claimed that the principles of justice had not been observed. He questioned the government’s intentions, stating that it was unclear what direction it intended to take the country.
He said that opposition leaders were being sidelined, while the remaining members of the National Assembly were also under threat.
Referring to the status of Omar Ayub, Qaiser said that Ayub had secured a stay order from the court and remained the recognised leader of the opposition.
Qaiser said that the opposition could not be defeated in its struggle and vowed that it would not back down.
He reiterated the demand for a judicial commission to conduct transparent investigations into the sugar scandal.
