Sindh government has initiated a comprehensive property survey across all seven districts of Karachi, aiming to document homes, shops, and plots to improve tax collection for local bodies.
The project, launched under the ‘Click’ initiative with support from the World Bank, is expected to be completed within a year at a cost of $20 million.
The survey is designed to strengthen municipal institutions by updating the property database, which is crucial for efficient tax collection and effective urban planning. According to officials, the last property record from 2001 showed around 900,000 registered properties in Karachi. With the new survey, this number is projected to rise to 3.3 million.
However, the move has drawn criticism from the opposition.
Sindh Assembly Opposition Leader Ali Khurshidi questioned why the survey is being conducted exclusively in Karachi and not extended to other cities in the province.
Despite the political objections, the Sindh government maintains that the initiative will bring long-term benefits by enhancing revenue streams and improving service delivery in the metropolis.
