Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the ongoing violence in Palestine, stating that over 52,000 people have been killed and that “blood is flowing in the streets of Gaza”.
Addressing a ceremony held to mark Azerbaijan’s Independence Day, he urged the international community to stand united against such brutality.
Speaking at the event, which also commemorated Pakistan’s Youm-e-Takbeer, the day the country became a nuclear power in 1998, the Prime Minister noted: “On 28 May, Pakistan became a nuclear state, and it is also the day Azerbaijan’s Armed Forces courageously fought to reclaim their occupied territories. We extend heartfelt congratulations to the people of Azerbaijan. Our political and diplomatic support remains firmly with them.”
India-Pakistan conflict revisited
The Prime Minister recounted a recent conflict between Pakistan and what he referred to as a “cowardly enemy”, five times larger economically and in possession of advanced technology and fighter jets.

He referenced the Pahalgam attack, where 26 individuals were killed, labelling it tragic but accusing India of falsely blaming Pakistan. He stated that Pakistan offered an impartial international investigation, which India rejected, instead opting to attack Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of women and children and injuring 55 civilians.
Retaliation and call for peace
In response, Pakistan retaliated in self-defence.
“Our brave air force downed six Indian aircraft, including four Rafales and one MiG-29,” he stated. “We made it clear that while we desire peace, any aggression will be met with a firm response.”
On the night of May 9–10 , Pakistan decided to respond appropriately. After Fajr (dawn) prayers, Pakistani forces launched a counteroffensive. The Prime Minister alleged that India again attacked, this time launching BrahMos missiles targeting various regions in Pakistan.
Field Marshal Asim Munir reportedly informed the Prime Minister about the renewed aggression.
“With confidence in his voice, he made it clear: we had to teach the enemy a lesson,” said Shehbaz. “We targeted Indian military installations effectively. Later, the Army Chief informed us that India was seeking a ceasefire. I responded: we believe in peace, so we should accept their request.”
Gratitude to allies and support for Kashmir
The Prime Minister expressed deep gratitude for the unwavering support from Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
“No words are enough to thank them. Our trilateral meeting was highly productive,” he added.
He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to Kashmir, thanking brotherly nations for their backing.
“The people of Kashmir must be given their fundamental right to freedom. The Kashmir issue must be resolved in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions. That day is not far when Kashmiris will be free from occupation.”
President Ilham Aliyev hails trilateral cooperation
Speaking at the same event, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan congratulated his nation on Independence Day, praising the participation of friendly countries as a great honour.
“In our trilateral meeting, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening strategic cooperation,” he said.
The celebration was attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye, Field Marshal General Asim Munir, and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. National anthems of Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Pakistan were played at the ceremony's outset.
President Aliyev highlighted the long-standing conflict with Armenia, accusing it of occupying Azerbaijani territories and committing genocide against local populations, which led to mass displacement.
“Azerbaijan gained independence 107 years ago but was occupied by the Soviet Union seven years later,” he said.
He added that the current ceremony was being held in liberated territories, and that development efforts are actively underway following the 2020 victory over Armenia.
President Erdoğan reaffirms solidarity
Meanwhile, addressing the gathering, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan expressed deep appreciation for the hospitality shown and reaffirmed Türkiye’s support for Azerbaijan.
“I would say: two states, one nation. Azerbaijan’s independence is a matter of great pride. Türkiye, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan are three strong friends. We are three countries but one nation.”
He emphasised unity, particularly in the context of Karabakh’s liberation, saying: “With the liberation of Karabakh, Azerbaijan has grown even stronger. Türkiye has always stood with Azerbaijan through every trial.”
