Höegh Aurora, the world’s largest vehicle carrier, is making waves in the maritime industry.
Operated by Norway-based Höegh Autoliners, this massive Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) can transport an astonishing 9,100 vehicles, surpassing the previous record by 600 cars.
Built by China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) in Jiangsu, China, Höegh Aurora measures 199.9 meters in length and 37.5 meters in width, making it the most spacious vessel of its kind. With 14 reinforced decks and enhanced ramp systems, it is designed to carry both conventional and electric vehicles, ensuring future adaptability as the automotive industry shifts towards EVs.
Leading the charge in sustainable shipping
Beyond its sheer size, Höegh Aurora is setting a new benchmark in eco-friendly shipping. The carrier has 1,500 square meters of solar panels, which reduce generator-produced electricity by 30-35%. Additionally, it runs on a combination of liquefied natural gas (LNG), biofuels, and low-sulfur oil, significantly cutting down carbon emissions.
Höegh Autoliners is determined to push its sustainability goals even further. By 2027, all 12 commissioned Aurora-class carriers will be powered by clean ammonia, a zero-carbon fuel that will help the company achieve net-zero emissions.

According to Sebjørn Dahl, COO of Höegh Autoliners, the Aurora Class is the "crown jewel" of the company’s green fleet renewal program. “These vessels meet the demands of our growing number of carbon-conscious customers seeking emission reductions and sustainable transportation,” he said.
With the Höegh Aurora leading the way, the shipping industry is moving towards a more sustainable future, proving that large-scale transportation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
