Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that his country fully supports the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States, particularly the diplomatic efforts in which Pakistan is playing a mediating role.
In an interview with a Russian newspaper, Lavrov said any potential understanding or agreement should take into account not only Iran's interests but also the security and political interests of its neighbouring countries in order to promote lasting stability in the region.
The Russian foreign minister further said that the United States itself recognises the seriousness of the current tensions with Iran. However, he noted that Washington appears to face difficulties in adopting a clear and effective strategy to overcome the crisis.
Lavrov said responsibility for the present situation largely rests with the United States, as certain policies and decisions in the past contributed to growing mistrust and tensions across the region.
He added that, alongside Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt are also engaged in diplomatic contacts and the negotiating process. The involvement of several regional countries, he said, reflects a shared desire among key stakeholders to secure a peaceful resolution to the dispute.
The Russian foreign minister stressed that the most important priority under the current circumstances is to ensure that negotiations continue without interruption, as sustained dialogue remains the only path towards reducing tensions and reaching an acceptable solution.
