Indian media has claimed that a 700-year-old banyan tree has been identified in the Indian state of Bihar, terming it as the oldest scientifically age-verified banyan tree recorded to date.
According to Indian media, researchers used modern scientific methods to determine the tree's actual age. The study obtained samples from near the tree's inner section and analysed the most stable component of the plant's cellular material. The tree's age was determined through highly sensitive radiocarbon testing.
According to Indian media, the findings indicated that the tree is around 700 years old, significantly older than previous estimates. It had earlier been believed to be between 300 and 350 years old and located near an old structure, but the new research disputes that assessment.
Tree discovery could lead to better understanding of environment
Indian media reported that experts believe the tree is likely a surviving remnant of the region's ancient forests. They said the discovery could contribute to a better understanding of environmental conservation and natural heritage.
