The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a rain alert across the country as a fresh weather system is expected to enter northern Pakistan from tomorrow.
The NDMA, in its outlook from tomorrow until July 10, has reviewed the prevailing weather conditions and river flows. According to its spokesperson, an active weather system will enter northern Pakistan from tomorrow, with rainfall expected in various regions between July 7 and 10.
Rain is forecast for Kashmir, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad. Thunderstorms with rain are also expected over the Potohar region and north-eastern Punjab.
Rain in Indus, Jhelum adjoining areas
The NDMA spokesperson stated that rainfall is also likely in areas adjoining the River Indus and River Jhelum. Upper catchment areas of the Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are also expected to receive rain.
Landslide concern in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
There is concern of landslides in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. A slight rise in water flow is expected in River Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej due to the rainfall.
Inflow into Tarbela and Mangla dams is also expected to increase slightly. However, authorities state that there is no major risk of widespread river flooding under the current situation.
An increase in water flow is also expected in hill torrents and smaller rain-fed streams. Localised flooding may occur in sensitive upper regions and hilly streams, while urban flooding and inundation of low-lying areas remains a possibility.
