Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that implementation of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States is “difficult but possible”.
According to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA), during a meeting with a leader of Hamas, Ghalibaf stressed that diplomacy and negotiations must “untie the military knot, preserve the achievements of fighters and strengthen them”.
He stated that “the memorandum is being implemented today, and its implementation is difficult but possible”, according to his remarks.
US-Iran talks in Pakistan on July 11
In related developments, media reports suggest that talks between the United States and Iran are expected to take place in Pakistan on July 11, amid discussions on the nuclear file and sanctions.
Reports carried by several media outlets, including Al Arabiya, indicate that the next round of negotiations may be held in Pakistan on that date.
The discussions are expected to cover sanctions imposed on Iran, frozen Iranian assets, and its nuclear programme.
It has also been reported that the decision to send the Iranian delegation will be taken after the conclusion of the funeral ceremonies of Ayatollah Khamenei.
In parallel reporting, US media have suggested that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian played a key role in persuading Mojtaba Khamenei to accept a diplomatic track with Washington.
Pezeshkian is also reported to have said, ahead of any potential agreement, that a maritime blockade had caused severe economic disruption inside Iran.
The Central Bank of Iran governor has warned that continued blockade conditions could lead to shortages of food and medicine by the end of August, according to the New York Times.
Further reports state that Pezeshkian has indicated the possibility of resignation if any agreement with the United States is rejected.
Mojtaba Khamenei is reported to have said he would accept any agreement if it is approved by the Supreme National Security Council.
It has also been reported that the Supreme National Security Council of Iran has approved the plan by a large majority.
