US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a telephone conversation on Friday.
Both leaders agreed to meet soon in Washington. According to a statement issued from Tel Aviv by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu congratulated President Trump on the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The statement noted that Netanyahu said Israel places great importance on its close and strong relations with the United States. Both leaders also discussed matters of mutual interest and agreed to hold an early meeting.
International media reports said the contact took place at a time when the United States and Israel remain in continuous communication over Iran, Gaza, and the broader regional security situation.
Diplomatic sources stated that the expected meeting is likely to cover key regional issues, including Iran, the Gaza war, efforts for a ceasefire and the release of hostages, as well as defence cooperation.
It is recalled that in recent weeks reports had suggested tensions in relations between Trump and Netanyahu. However, both leaders later rejected such impressions and maintained that contact and cooperation between them remain ongoing.
