Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo has set two new records after scoring in Portugal’s match against Croatia in the round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ronaldo’s goal marked his first in a World Cup knockout stage since his debut in 2006, when he scored an equaliser in a 2–1 victory for Portugal.
Portuguese media commentary also reflected criticism of the national side following their runners-up finish, with headlines describing the team in stark terms.
At 41 years and 147 days, Ronaldo became the oldest player to feature in a World Cup knockout match and the oldest goalscorer in the competition’s history, surpassing his compatriot Pepe, aged 39, and Cameroon’s Roger Milla, aged 38.
