A media report on Friday stated that a couple in a Norwegian village have named their newborn daughter after footballer Erling Haaland, amid football fever during the World Cup.
The child was born at the same minute, the 86th, in which Haaland scored the winning goal on Tuesday against Ivory Coast in the Round of 32, according to Turkish broadcaster TV2.
The mother, Lene, said she heard loud cheering from her husband, a football enthusiast, and realised at once that something significant had taken place.
She added that the goal by Haaland led the father, Bjarte, to reconsider the name originally intended for their daughter.
The couple had not finalised a name and were considering several options, but the name “Erle”, derived from Erling, was not on the shortlist until it was suggested at the last moment.
It was then selected for the child.
Norway are due to meet Brazil in the Round of 16 on Sunday, marking the furthest stage the national side has reached in the men’s World Cup.
