US President Donald Trump has claimed that officials from the United States and Iran will meet in Doha today (Tuesday).
In a statement on social media, he said Iran had requested the meeting, which has been arranged in Doha. The statement came at a time when tensions between the two countries have once again increased. Earlier, officials from the United States and Iran held talks in Burgenstock, Switzerland, following the electronic signing of the “Islamabad Understanding Memorandum”.
Doha Iran-US talks amid renewed tensions
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir were also present during the proceedings. Pakistan has carried out extensive diplomatic efforts for peace between the United States and Iran, which have been acknowledged internationally. Pakistani officials remain hopeful that both sides may agree on a peace accord within 60 days, with continued efforts underway to support the process.
No Doha talks expected, says Iran
In separate remarks, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said that the visit of US representatives to Qatar is not linked to Iran-related matters. It has stated that no talks are expected with the United States in Doha at present. Iranian officials have said that no final negotiations on an agreement have yet begun.
According to Iranian officials, implementation of certain provisions of the memorandum of understanding is necessary before further talks can proceed. It has also been stated that an Iranian technical delegation will visit Qatar this week to discuss implementation of the agreement. The delegation is expected to focus on enforcement of the understanding rather than formal negotiations.
