The talks between the United States and Iran were halted following renewed fighting in the Strait of Hormuz.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the suspension came amid ongoing clashes in the region, where technical-level discussions were due to take place after a memorandum of understanding had been signed.
It was agreed after the memorandum that both sides would continue technical negotiations; however, continuous clashes over the past two days disrupted the process.
Despite the agreement, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz have not eased. Iran and the United States have continued to exchange attacks over the past two days.
US forces, under instructions from President Donald Trump, carried out air strikes on Iranian targets. In response, Iranian forces launched missiles and drones at US installations in Kuwait and Bahrain, terming the strikes a breach of the memorandum of understanding.
President Donald Trump again warned Iran of severe consequences, stating that further restraint was no longer possible and that Iran’s existence itself could be at risk.
Iran has termed the US strikes as a violation of the agreement. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated that any further violation would be met with a strong and decisive response.
