England all-rounder Ben Stokes is set to bring the curtain down on his international career following the ongoing Test match against New Zealand.
Stokes retires mid-Test against New Zealand after nightclub controversy
Stokes has been a central figure in England’s 2019 World Cup triumph and has served as an inspirational Test captain since taking over from Joe Root in 2022. His retirement comes midway through the third Test against New Zealand, following a nightclub controversy involving pacer Gus Atkinson on 8 June. Both players were later cleared by the England and Wales Cricket Board after receiving a warning.
England captain's apology before final Test
Stokes apologised before the final Test of the series, stating that his main aim remained to help England secure the series win.

He made his ODI debut against Ireland in 2011 and earned his Test cap against Australia during the Ashes series in 2013.
Stokes moved past the disappointment of the 2016 T20 World Cup final defeat against West Indies, where Carlos Brathwaite struck four consecutive sixes, and later played a leading role in England’s 2019 50-over World Cup victory against New Zealand. His unbeaten 135 at Headingley in the Ashes remains widely regarded as one of the finest innings in Test cricket.
ECB confirms Stokes retirement; Thompson hails England great
ECB Chair Richard Thompson confirmed Stokes’ retirement in an official statement. He said Ben Stokes leaves the international game as one of England’s greatest cricketers and one of the defining players of his generation. He added that Stokes’ performances under pressure, competitiveness, and ability to deliver in decisive moments had provided lasting memories for fans.
He praised Stokes for inspiring England’s victories in major tournaments, including the 2019 World Cup, and for his Ashes heroics at Headingley.
Thompson stated that beyond his achievements, Stokes had inspired younger players to take up cricket with belief and positivity, adding that England were losing a batter, bowler, captain and talisman.
Root on Stokes’ openness over personal challenges
It is pertinent to note that Joe Root, in 2022, praised the Stokes’ openness regarding personal challenges, saying his honesty would improve the environment within the team.
He added that Stokes’ willingness to speak openly about difficulties served as a reminder that players face vulnerabilities and should seek support when needed.
