A 20-year-old British man has suffered severe damage to his eyes following the misuse of a massage gun intended for muscle pain relief.
The foreign media reported that he used the device directly on his eyelids and eyeballs in an attempt to ease eye fatigue. Doctors stated that the young man had been using the massage gun on his eyes on a weekly basis for the past three months in search of relief.
A few days before hospital admission, he developed sudden darkness in vision, along with flashing lights and blurred floating spots in front of his right eye, which led to urgent medical attention.
Doctors report rare double retinal tears
Medical experts confirmed that examination revealed the strong vibration and pressure from the device caused the eyeballs to indent inwards, resulting in severe tearing of the internal retinal layers in both eyes.
Medical experts added that this is the first documented case in medical history of simultaneous retinal tears in both eyes caused by a massage gun.
Doctors added that following prompt treatment and surgery, and after six months, the patient’s condition has stabilised and further deterioration of vision has been prevented.
