Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that fake images generated through artificial intelligence have been circulated on social media.
According to international media reports, she has expressed serious concern over the rising use of AI-generated deepfakes, warning that such material may easily mislead the public. The Italian prime minister added that political opponents were circulating such content in an attempt to target her.
Meloni shared a manipulated image on the social media platform X and remarked that, in this instance, the creator had at least made her appear somewhat better. She underlined that the episode shows how far individuals are prepared to go in spreading false information and carrying out personal attacks.
She stated that deepfakes constitute a dangerous instrument, as they are capable of deceiving and influencing people, and may be used against anyone.
She added that while she is able to defend herself, many others do not have the same capacity.
Meloni urged the public to verify any content before accepting or sharing it on social media.
