French President Emmanuel Macron has renewed efforts to ease tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, holding talks with Iran’s leadership as diplomatic momentum builds toward a possible Gulf ceasefire.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he spoke with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
During the conversation, Macron stressed the importance of ensuring smooth shipping and avoiding disruptions in one of the world’s most critical maritime routes.
Macron said he encouraged Iran to consider plans by France and Britain to establish an international mission aimed at securing safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The proposed initiative is intended to lay the groundwork for long-term maritime stability and uninterrupted global trade flows.
US-Iran deal appears within reach
Meanwhile, the United States and Iran are reportedly close to finalizing a preliminary agreement to end the ongoing Gulf conflict.
Sources involved in mediation say both sides are nearing a one-page memorandum that could formally bring hostilities to an end.
Pakistan’s role in mediation
A Pakistani mediation source indicated that talks are progressing rapidly, suggesting that an agreement could be finalized soon.
“We will close this very soon. We are getting close,” the source said, highlighting Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue between the two sides.
Key elements of proposed agreement
According to sources, the proposed draft agreement includes several major steps:
- Formal end to hostilities
- Restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz
- Lifting of US sanctions on Iran
- Restrictions on Iran’s nuclear programme
- Framework for future negotiations
If approved, the deal would be followed by 30 days of detailed negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement.
Former US President Donald Trump said there has been “great progress” in the ongoing talks.
He also suggested that the conflict could end if Iran agrees to previously discussed conditions and announced a pause in a naval mission intended to secure shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz.
