A high-intensity explosion in a two-wheeler parked outside the Border Security Force (BSF) Frontier Headquarters in Jalandhar Cantt caused widespread panic on Tuesday around 8pm.
The blast destroyed the scooter, damaged nearby property, and prompted a full-scale security response as forensic teams and bomb disposal units rushed to the scene.
According to initial details, the scooter belonged to Gurpreet, a delivery rider working for a private company, who had arrived at the BSF headquarters to deliver a parcel.
Police said the explosion occurred while the rider had gone inside the premises to complete the delivery.
The blast completely gutted the Yamaha scooter and shattered window panes of a nearby building, while debris was scattered several metres across the road.
Mass panic in busy area
The incident took place on a busy road linking Jalandhar city with the Amritsar–New Delhi highway, triggering panic among nearby vendors and commuters.
Shopkeepers at a nearby vegetable market said the explosion was so loud it could be heard nearly a kilometre away.
Eyewitnesses reported that the two-wheeler immediately caught fire after the blast.
Police investigation underway
Senior police officials cordoned off the area shortly after the incident.
Forensic experts, bomb disposal squads, and dog units were called in to collect evidence and inspect the site.
Authorities are currently examining multiple possibilities, including whether any explosive material may have been inside a parcel carried on the scooter.
Jalandhar Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur Randhawa said that no conclusive evidence of sabotage or use of explosives had been found at this stage.
She added that all aspects of the case were being examined, including mechanical failure, as the vehicle was reportedly due for servicing.
Police also confirmed that Gurpreet Singh, the delivery rider, is being questioned as part of the investigation.
