Russia has expressed readiness for a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine, tied to its Victory Day celebrations on May 9, which mark the Soviet Union’s role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II.
The proposal reportedly emerged during a 90-minute phone call between Putin and Donald Trump on April 29, 2026.
Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Putin informed Trump of the possibility of declaring a truce during the holiday period.
Trump later stated that he suggested “a little bit of a ceasefire,” adding that Putin appeared receptive to the idea.
Duration remains unclear
Initial reports indicate that the ceasefire could last for a very limited period—possibly just one day on May 9, or a short window around it.
The timing aligns closely with Russia’s traditional military parade at Red Square, suggesting the move may be aimed at ensuring security during national celebrations.
However, no formal agreement or detailed framework has been announced.
Ukraine seeks clarity
President Zelenskyy has responded cautiously, saying Ukraine is still waiting for clear details from Moscow.
He described the proposal as potentially a brief pause “for a parade,” and reiterated Kyiv’s call for a broader ceasefire lasting at least 30 days.
Ukrainian officials remain skeptical, pointing to previous temporary truces—such as the Easter ceasefire—which they say were repeatedly violated by Russian forces.
Ukraine views the latest offer as largely symbolic rather than a genuine step toward peace.
The skepticism comes amid ongoing fighting, including continued Russian advances and Ukrainian drone strikes deep into Russian territory.
Recent attacks have reportedly reached areas near Moscow, increasing tensions ahead of the Victory Day events.
This is not the first time Russia has proposed a holiday-linked truce.
In April 2025, Putin announced a unilateral 72-hour ceasefire from May 8 to 10 to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.
Ukraine at the time called for an immediate and longer ceasefire, while accusing Russia of violating the temporary pause.
