Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said Russia prefers a peace agreement to achieve its objectives in Ukraine, but warned that military operations will continue if Kyiv does not agree.
In an interview with Russian television, Mr Peskov said Moscow’s foremost wish was to resolve the Ukraine conflict through negotiations and an agreement. However, he added that if the Ukrainian leadership was not prepared for such a course, Russia would continue its special military operation to attain its aims.
He also commented on remarks by US President Donald Trump, who had said that an agreement to resolve the Ukraine conflict was close.
According to the Kremlin, President Trump, during a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 29, stressed the need for an early end to the war and said the United States stood ready to assist in this regard.
Russian officials said Moscow still favoured a diplomatic solution, but in view of realities on the ground, all options remained open.
