The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova has said that the term justice in present-day Ukraine has lost its meaning and has become a contradiction.
In a statement issued on the twelfth anniversary of the Odessa tragedy, Zakharova said violations of civil rights, legal irregularities and corruption had severely affected the system of justice in Ukraine.
She said the Ukrainian authorities had made commitments to complete the investigation into the Odessa incident and to punish those responsible, but no effective progress has so far come to light.
Zakharova added that the European countries have continued to extend financial and moral support to Ukraine, despite, in her words, the persistence of corruption and other problems there.
She added that the situation which emerged after the change in Kyiv in 2014 has had a profound impact on Ukraine’s legal and political systems.
It may be recalled that on 2 May 2014, dozens of people were killed and hundreds injured during clashes in Odessa, when protesters who had taken shelter inside a building were caught in a fire.
The Russian position maintains that the failure to conduct a full investigation into the incident remains a serious question to this day.
