A violent incident at a local high school has left six people injured after a stabbing during an altercation.
Authorities say the situation unfolded quickly, leading to panic and a school lockdown.
The suspect, a student, is now in custody.
The incident took place at Henry Foss High School shortly after 1:30 p.m. local time on Thursday.
Emergency teams responded at 1:38 p.m., according to fire officials. The school was immediately placed on lockdown as police arrived at the scene.
Victims and injuries reported
Authorities confirmed that five students and one security guard were injured during the incident. The suspect is also among the injured.
Police said several victims suffered stab or cut wounds during the altercation. Some reports initially described multiple conditions as critical, but officials later confirmed all individuals were in stable condition.
Condition of the injured
Early updates from the Tacoma Fire Department indicated that four victims were in serious condition, while two had non-life-threatening injuries.
Later, officials confirmed that all six individuals, including the suspect, were stable after receiving hospital treatment.
Police confirmed that the suspect, a student at the school, was taken into custody at the scene.
According to Shelbie Boyd, the suspect has been charged with five counts of first-degree assault. The motive behind the altercation remains unclear.
School locked down
A large police presence was seen outside the school as it remained under lockdown during the investigation.
Authorities later arranged for parents to reunite with their children in the school parking lot.
Tacoma Public Schools thanked staff and emergency responders for their quick action.
The district also confirmed that all school and after-school activities for Friday were canceled as investigations continue.
Police detectives and forensic teams remained at the school to collect evidence and understand what led to the attack.
Officials have not yet confirmed what triggered the altercation.
