Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a phone call discussing key global conflicts, including Iran’s nuclear programme and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin, the two leaders exchanged views on resolving tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
Putin reportedly presented proposals aimed at easing the ongoing standoff with Tehran.
Ukraine ceasefire proposal
During the call, Putin also proposed a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine.
The suggested truce is intended to coincide with the anniversary of the end of World War II next month, according to a Kremlin aide.
Separately, Trump reiterated his administration’s position on Iran’s military capabilities.
Speaking at the Oval Office, he claimed the United States had significantly weakened Iran’s naval, air, and defence systems.
Claims on Iran’s military damage
Trump said that most of Iran’s military infrastructure has been degraded.
He stated that around 80 percent of Iran’s missile production facilities have been destroyed, leaving the country with limited capabilities.
The US president again stressed that Iran would not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons.
“They know it and just about everybody else does,” Trump said, reinforcing Washington’s position on the issue.
