In Mumbai, the mysterious death of four family members has sparked questions about whether something as common as watermelon can turn deadly.
Health experts say the risk, while rare, is real under certain conditions.
According to Indian media reports, 40-year-old Abdullah Abdul Qadir, his 35-year-old wife Nasreen, and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13) died after their health suddenly deteriorated.
The family had eaten biryani on Saturday night. Later, around 1am, they consumed watermelon. Within hours, all four reportedly fell seriously ill, raising suspicions of food poisoning.
Authorities suspect the deaths may be linked to contaminated food, though investigations are ongoing.
Can watermelon really cause food poisoning?
Health experts say watermelon itself is not dangerous—but contamination can make it harmful.
Due to its high water and natural sugar content, watermelon can become a breeding ground for bacteria if not handled properly. If the fruit is exposed to harmful microorganisms, it may lead to food poisoning.
Experts warn that in severe cases, such contamination can result in dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In extreme situations, it may lead to systemic infections like sepsis, which can be fatal without timely medical treatment.
Risks linked to artificial sweetening practices
Health professionals also point to reports suggesting that some vendors may inject glucose or sugar solutions into watermelon to enhance sweetness or improve appearance.
If such practices involve contaminated substances, they can significantly increase bacterial growth inside the fruit. This raises the risk of severe health complications, especially for children and vulnerable individuals.
When is the best time to eat watermelon?
Experts emphasize that timing also plays a role in digestion.
Eating fruits like watermelon late at night—especially after heavy meals—can slow digestion and increase discomfort. Since metabolism slows during sleep, consuming fruit after 8pm is generally discouraged.
The safest and most beneficial time to eat watermelon is in the morning or during the daytime.
