The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has summoned Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in his personal capacity in a case related to the non-appointment of the Member Finance of the PTA Tribunal.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani heard the matter and directed the prime minister to appear before the court on May 18. During the hearing, Justice Kayani asked why the Member Finance of the PTA Tribunal had not yet been appointed.
The court directed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to appear in person and explain the delay. The judge remarked that the prime minister should come to court and clarify why the appointment had not been made.
The court also summoned the principal secretary and the secretary of the Cabinet Division. Justice Kayani directed both officials to appear before the court along with the prime minister.
The case is linked to the incomplete formation of the PTA Tribunal due to the pending appointment of its member finance.
During the proceedings, the assistant attorney general informed the court that a retired judge had been appointed as a member of the tribunal. The statement drew sharp remarks from Justice Kayani regarding the appointment of retired judges to tribunals.
Justice Kayani remarks on retired judges
Justice Kayani remarked that retired judges had “sunk the ship more.” He further observed that retired judges were more interested in going to tribunals.
The judge remarked that when they miss the protocol and salute at night, they cannot sleep.
Justice Kayani also remarked that one person’s heart is in the NRC, while another is interested in some other tribunal. The remarks came during the hearing as the court questioned the delay in appointing the member finance of the PTA Tribunal.
The case will now proceed with the personal appearance of the prime minister and senior government officials on May 18.
