In Gilgit-Baltistan, rising temperatures have accelerated the melting of glaciers, due to which the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert.
The Hisper-Hopper Glacier has shown increased melting, resulting in a continuous rise in water flow and river levels. According to the NDMA spokesperson, the authority is fully aware of the situation and monitoring remains ongoing. Instructions have been issued to the relevant administrations to take immediate protective measures for residents living along riverbanks. Residents of Gojal, Rahimabad, Nomal, Jutal, Jutial Colony and Chilmish, along with travellers, have been advised to exercise caution.
The NDMA spokesperson stated that the melting of the Hisper-Hopper Glacier has led to an increase in water flow. River water levels at the site have risen, prompting the issuance of an alert. Local populations and travellers have been instructed to observe precautionary measures.
Separately, the NDMA has forecast rainfall, hailstorms and strong winds in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern regions over the next 12 to 24 hours.
According to the NDMA spokesperson, rain is expected in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the next 12 to 24 hours, while Islamabad and various areas of Punjab may also receive rainfall. Rain has also been forecast in different parts of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, with a possibility of hailstorms in several locations across the country.
The spokesperson noted that hailstorms and strong winds may damage weak structures and installations. There is also risk of glacial lake outburst floods and landslides in northern regions. Road links may be affected or blocked due to rainfall and flooding conditions. Relevant authorities have been instructed to remain on alert in sensitive and mountainous areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the risk of road closures.
