Israel has appointed its first ambassador to the so-called Somaliland.
In the self-declared state of Somaliland, which broke away from Somalia in Africa, Israel has named its first envoy, months after announcing its recognition of the territory.
According to Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Michael Lotem has been designated as Israel’s ambassador to Somaliland. He is currently serving as Special Envoy for Economic Affairs in Africa.
Mr Lotem has previously served as Israel’s ambassador to Kenya, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
It is recalled that Israel recognised the independence of the so-called Somaliland in December 2025, becoming the first country in the world to do so.
Somaliland declared independence in 1991, but has yet to receive formal recognition from any country. However, a number of states, including the United Kingdom, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates, maintain liaison offices there.
