Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed on Friday that high-level diplomatic contacts be intensified and consultations continue, following reports that a delegation from Iran, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi, is expected in Pakistan for the second round of talks with the United States team.
According to details, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar briefed the prime minister on the development after his telephonic contact with his Iranian counterpart. He apprised the premier of the contents of his discussion with Abbas Aragchi.
The regional security situation and fears of an increase in tensions were discussed. In Islamabad, there was also a detailed exchange of views on the second round of Iran-US negotiations.
The deputy prime minister also informed the prime minister of diplomatic progress. Pakistan remains active in efforts to bring both sides back to the negotiating table at the earliest.
The prime minister termed the expected arrival of the Iranian delegation an important diplomatic development. Both the prime minister and deputy prime minister agreed to keep close watch on the evolving situation.
The prime minister issued key policy and diplomatic directions aimed at peace and stability. Pakistan reaffirmed its resolve to reduce tensions in the region, promote confidence-building measures, and advance the negotiation process.
Earlier, separately, Araghchi has contacted Pakistan’s political and military leadership to discuss the regional situation and ceasefire-related issues, according to Iranian media.
The calls come as Pakistan continues efforts to support a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and push for renewed negotiations.
According to Iranian media, Araghchi held separate telephone conversations with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir. The leaders discussed the evolving regional situation and matters linked to the ceasefire.
Iranian media said the contacts were part of ongoing regional consultations amid efforts to reduce tensions.
