The United States has extended a sanctions waiver on the purchase of Russian oil for a further month.
According to details released on Saturday, the move allows limited transactions to proceed under defined conditions.
The US Treasury Department stated that Russian oil may be purchased without restriction until May 16, with the measure intended to address shortages in international oil markets.
The waiver applies only to oil already loaded on tankers and present at sea.
The decision is viewed as part of Washington’s efforts to stabilise global energy prices, which have risen following recent regional tensions.
The licence text emphasised that the exemption does not include transactions related to Iran, Cuba or North Korea, and restrictions on Iranian oil exports remain in place.
It is recalled that the United States had previously lifted sanctions on Russian oil for one month, which were reimposed on 11 April.
Meanwhile, global oil prices have shown a marked decline following Iran’s announcement regarding the full opening of the Strait of Hormuz.
