Iran said on Thursday it is working to hold the United States and Israel accountable for the killing of its leadership, describing the actions as violations of international law and “war crimes.”
In remarks to a Russian news outlet, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that the issue goes beyond Iran and concerns the entire international community. He stressed that there is a broader demand for accountability over actions he described as crimes against global peace and security, as well as crimes against humanity.
Baghaei argued that the alleged actions breach the principles of the Geneva Conventions, which require all countries to uphold and enforce humanitarian standards during conflict. He urged all United Nations member states to press for accountability from both the U.S. and Israel.
He added that Tehran intends to pursue legal action through both domestic mechanisms and international legal channels to address what he called serious crimes against the Iranian people.
According to Iranian claims, more than 3,300 people have been killed in joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes since February 28, including senior leadership figures such as Ali Khamenei.
A two-week ceasefire between the sides was recently brokered with mediation support from Pakistan. Despite this, recent direct talks between the U.S. and Iran—held in Pakistan—ended without any agreement, leaving tensions unresolved.
