Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested a delay in his corruption trial testimony.
The request comes as the region faces ongoing security and diplomatic developments.
The court is now set to review the plea ahead of the scheduled hearing.
Benjamin Netanyahu has asked the court to postpone his testimony in the long-running corruption trial, which was scheduled to resume next week.
According to a court filing submitted by his lawyer, the delay has been sought due to the current security situation in the region.
The trial was set to resume on Sunday after Israel lifted a state of emergency following a ceasefire with Iran.
Security and diplomatic reasons cited
The defence stated that Netanyahu would be unable to testify for at least two weeks due to “classified security and diplomatic reasons.”
A sealed envelope containing details of these reasons has been submitted to the Jerusalem District Court.
The court will issue a decision after reviewing the prosecution’s response.
Netanyahu, the first sitting Israeli prime minister to be charged with a crime, has denied all allegations against him.
He faces charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust filed in 2019 following years of investigations.
The trial began in 2020 and carries the possibility of jail time if he is convicted.
The proceedings have faced multiple delays over the years, often due to Netanyahu’s official duties.
His legal challenges, along with the fallout from the 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel, have impacted his political standing.
Israel is expected to hold elections in October, where polls suggest Netanyahu’s coalition could face significant challenges.
