New details have emerged in the suicide attempt case involving a female student at a private university in Lahore, as police investigations and medical assessments continue amid concerns over student safety.
According to police officials, the suicide attempt appears to be linked to obstacles faced by the student in a marriage of her choice. Investigators say resistance from the families, described as heirs in the inquiry, played a central role in triggering the incident.
As part of the probe, the student’s mobile phone call records were retrieved to reconstruct events leading up to the attempt.
Key individual in investigation
Police have included a young man in the investigation who reportedly spoke to the student on the phone for 27 minutes shortly before the incident. Officials confirmed that a detailed statement from him will be recorded.

The student herself will also provide a statement once her medical condition stabilizes and doctors deem her fit to speak.
Medical board expanded
The student is currently under treatment at Lahore General Hospital, where her condition remains critical. Hospital authorities confirmed that the medical board overseeing her treatment has been expanded from four to seven members.

Specialists in respiratory medicine and gynaecology have been added to the board to ensure comprehensive care.
Danger not over
According to the medical board, the student’s mental condition has shown improvement, and her lungs are functioning satisfactorily. Her oxygen requirement has reduced, indicating partial respiratory recovery.
However, doctors stressed that she is still on a ventilator, and the breathing machine is being removed on a trial basis daily to assess her ability to breathe independently.

Hospital officials said the student’s wounds have been cleaned and her bones thoroughly examined. A detailed treatment plan has been prepared and will be implemented once her condition improves further.
Doctors emphasized that while progress is encouraging, the patient remains in a delicate and closely monitored state.
Universities take preventive safety measures
Following the incident, private universities in Lahore have begun installing safety nets and other protective measures in campus buildings. University administrations said the steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The developments have reignited debate around student mental health, campus safety, and the need for stronger counseling and support systems.
