In a major verdict linked to the events of May 9, 2023, the Anti-Terrorism Court on Islamabad has handed down multiple life sentences to several accused for digital terrorism against state institutions.
The court had reserved its decision after the conclusion of the trial some time ago. Anti-Terrorism Court Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra announced the verdict on Thursday.
The court sentenced Adil Raja, Haider Mehdi, Shaheen Sehbai and Wajahat Saeed to life imprisonment twice each. Similarly, Sabir Shakir and Moeed Pirzada were also sentenced to two life terms each.
Additional prison terms, heavy fines
In addition to the life sentences, the court imposed a combined 35 years of imprisonment under other legal provisions. The accused were also ordered to pay a total fine of Rs1.5 million, according to the court order.
The court sentenced Sabir Shakir, Moeed Pirzada, and Syed Akbar Hussain to life imprisonment in the Aabpara police station case. Meanwhile, Shaheen Sehbai, Haider Mehdi, and Wajahat Saeed were convicted in the Ramna police station case.
During the proceedings, the prosecution presented 24 witnesses before the court to support its case. The charges related to alleged digital terrorism targeting state institutions during the events of May 9.
Trial conducted in absence
The court completed the trial in the absence of the accused at the request of the prosecution. Under Pakistan’s anti-terrorism laws, courts are legally empowered to conduct trials even if the accused are not present.
Legal observers say the verdict marks a significant development in cases involving digital platforms and terrorism-related charges.
