OnePlus has temporarily removed its AI Writer feature after users across multiple platforms reported that the tool was blocking content related to politically sensitive topics.
The company says it is fixing a “technical issue,” though the timing follows widespread claims of unexpected censorship in the Notes app.
OnePlus confirmed that it has disabled its AI Writer tool inside the Notes app to address what it calls “technical inconsistencies.” The feature allows users to generate and edit text using OnePlus AI across select devices.
However, throughout the week, multiple reports on Reddit, Twitter, and the official OnePlus community forum described the feature refusing to generate content for topics frequently censored inside China — the brand’s home market.
Users said that attempts to write about the Dalai Lama, Taiwan, or the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh returned the response “try entering something else.” In other cases, text initially generated by the AI would disappear instantly, replaced by an error message.
These experiences raised concerns that censorship rules typically applied within China may have unintentionally carried over into global versions of OnePlus AI.
Company issues explanation after internal review
In a Dec. 6 statement posted on its community forum, OnePlus said it began an internal investigation and needed additional time to fix the issue.
A representative from the company’s software team wrote:
“As the issue requires more time to address, we’re temporarily disabling the AI Writer in Notes to ensure a consistent user experience while we refine the underlying technical issue.”
The company added that “unexpected behaviour is unintentional” and reassured users that OnePlus remains committed to “Community-first technology.”
As reported by Android Authority, AI Writer had not returned to devices by Dec. 8, and OnePlus has not provided an estimated timeline for restoration.
The company also did not clarify whether the issue stems from a specific AI model or integration used inside the Notes app.
User impact and growing questions
The reports came from users outside China, suggesting that the bug — or unintended filtering — affected the international OnePlus community. The inability to generate content on common geopolitical terms led many to question the nature of the “technical inconsistency.”
While OnePlus has acknowledged the issue and responded quickly, users continue to question how such censorship-like behavior appeared on global devices in the first place. With no timeline for a fix, creators and writers who rely on AI Writer remain without access to the tool.
