Google has significantly upgraded its AI notebook tool NotebookLM, adding advanced reasoning, code execution capabilities, and new output formats.
The update transforms NotebookLM from a research assistant into a more powerful system capable of handling coding, data analysis and document creation workflows.
Powered by Gemini 3.5 and Antigravity
The upgraded NotebookLM now runs on Gemini 3.5, alongside Google’s Antigravity coding model, which enhances its ability to write and execute code.
According to Google, each notebook operates on a dedicated cloud-based environment capable of running code and supporting more than 100 built-in software skills.
The company claims the new system outperforms the previous version, achieving a 65%+ win rate across key benchmarks, including:
- 69.9% improvement in large document analysis
- 78.2% performance in web research tasks
With the latest update, NotebookLM can now:
- Write and execute code
- Perform structured data analysis
- Automate research workflows
- Generate insights from complex documents
This makes the tool more useful for developers, analysts, researchers and students working with large datasets or technical projects.
Expanded file creation
One of the biggest upgrades is NotebookLM’s ability to generate downloadable files directly from its interface.
Users can now create:
- PDFs
- Word documents
- Excel spreadsheets
- PowerPoint presentations
- CSV files
- Data visualizations
- Images
Users can also provide formatting instructions before generation and request revisions afterward, making the workflow more interactive and customizable.
Easier research with fewer barriers
NotebookLM has also lowered the entry barrier for research tasks.
Users no longer need to build a full source library before starting a project. Instead, they can begin with a simple idea or question, and the system will automatically pull relevant information from Google Search.
Users retain full control over which sources are added, and all references remain clearly attributed within the notebook.
Targeting power users, enterprises
The updated NotebookLM is currently available to Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business users on AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access plans.
A wider rollout is expected in the future as Google continues expanding its AI productivity ecosystem.
