The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that heatwave conditions are expected to persist in several parts of Pakistan between June 7 and 12, with temperatures likely to rise further in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and northern Punjab before rain brings some relief later in the week.
According to the NDMA's latest weather assessment, intense heat is expected to continue across Sindh, southern Punjab and Balochistan, while authorities are also monitoring the risk of glacier melting, landslides and flooding in northern areas.
The NDMA is closely reviewing the expected weather situation across the country from June 7 to 12.
According to the authority's spokesperson, heatwave conditions are likely to remain in place in Sindh, southern Punjab and Balochistan during the forecast period.
At the same time, temperatures are expected to increase in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad and northern Punjab between June 7 and 10, raising concerns about prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Rain in Islamabad, KP, northern Punjab
The NDMA has forecast rain in various parts of Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab on June 11 and June 12.
The expected rainfall may provide some respite from the ongoing heatwave, particularly in areas where temperatures are forecast to remain significantly above seasonal averages.
Punjab to remain under intense heat
According to the weather outlook, central and southern districts of Punjab are expected to continue experiencing intense heat conditions throughout the forecast period.
Residents in these regions are likely to face hot weather conditions as temperatures remain elevated over the coming days.
Most districts of Sindh are expected to remain hot and dry, with heatwave conditions continuing to affect several parts of the province. The NDMA said the prevailing weather pattern indicates little relief from high temperatures in the region during the review period.
Light rain expected in parts of Balochistan
While heat intensity is expected to persist across the plains of Balochistan, some northeastern districts may receive light rainfall on June 11 and 12.
The forecast suggests a mix of hot conditions and isolated rain activity in different parts of the province.
Rain forecast for several KP districts
The NDMA said rainfall is expected in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Mansehra, Abbottabad and Peshawar on June 11 and June 12.
The weather system is expected to bring intermittent showers to these areas after several days of rising temperatures.
Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK may also receive rain
Intermittent rainfall is also likely in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir during the same period.
Authorities are closely monitoring weather developments in these mountainous regions due to additional risks associated with rising temperatures.
The NDMA has warned that increasing temperatures could accelerate glacier melting in Gilgit-Baltistan and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
As a result, there is a risk of flash floods, glacial lake outburst events and landslides in vulnerable areas. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess potential impacts on local communities.
The NDMA said it remains engaged in reviewing weather conditions across the country and monitoring evolving forecasts.
Officials are tracking both the ongoing heatwave and the possibility of rain-related hazards in northern regions as Pakistan enters a period of extreme summer weather.
