United States Vice President JD Vance has said Israel must respect the peace process concerning Iran.
He said that around 1.25 million barrels of oil were transported through the Strait of Hormuz overnight, adding that Iran did not stop any vessel. Vance said the United States seeks improved relations with Iran, but warned that other options remain available if Tehran fails to change its conduct.
Speaking at a White House press briefing, he said a 60-day timeline begins from today. He added that what happens after two months will be decided in final negotiations, and that any tensions during this period must be managed through diplomacy.
He said that sanctions could be eased or lifted without approval from Congress. He said the impact of easing sanctions would be assessed in terms of how Iran manages financial transactions, adding that such easing should not be seen as a major concession.
Addressing Israel, Vance said civilian attacks in Beirut are not acceptable. He said Israel must respect the peace process and expressed hope that both sides would comply with agreements related to Lebanon. He added that there is an expectation the Lebanese government will take a policing role in southern Lebanon in the future.
Vance said the United States is maintaining a strict economic blockade on Iran, which will continue until there is a change in behaviour. He added that Iran’s economy is currently under severe pressure and that it must adjust its approach to re-enter the global system.
He also said Iran’s nuclear programme has been completely destroyed and that restarting it would require substantial funding. He said efforts are under way to ensure Iran does not restart its nuclear programme, and that its missile system should not become a threat to regional countries.
Vance added that while some believe Iran will not change its behaviour, the pressure in place leaves it with no choice. He said Gulf states believe the Obama-era deal strengthened Iran, while regional countries now support the current approach.
He maintained that Iran will not receive any funds from the United States, but if its conduct improves, financing may be made available through other channels for reconstruction purposes.
