Rohit Sharma moved to the top of the all-time one-day international six-hitting list after striking three sixes in India’s first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday.
His 51-ball 57 took him past the previous record held by former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi. Sharma’s three blows carried him to 352 ODI sixes, surpassing Afridi’s 351, a landmark that had stood since the Pakistan player’s retirement from the format in 2015. The India captain reached the feat during a controlled innings that balanced steady accumulation with occasional power hitting.
Afridi, who played for Pakistan as well as representative sides for Asia XI and the ICC, amassed his total across 398 matches between 1996 and 2015. Sharma, who made his ODI debut in 2007, has taken 277 matches to set the new benchmark.
Other leading names in the list include West Indies opener Chris Gayle with 331 sixes, Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jayasuriya with 270, India’s former captain MS Dhoni with 229, and England’s Eoin Morgan with 220.
