England secured a 115-run victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s after dismissing the tourists for 138 in their second innings while defending a target of 254.
Gus Atkinson led England’s attack with figures of 5 for 30, while Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue claimed two wickets apiece as New Zealand’s batting line-up struggled on a challenging surface.
New Zealand resumed their chase with hopes resting on Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips. Conway scored 41 before he was caught by Jacob Bethell off the bowling of Ben Stokes.
Phillips offered resistance with an unbeaten 44, striking seven fours and a six, but he lacked support from the lower order as wickets fell regularly at the other end.
Earlier, England were dismissed for 140 in their first innings despite Harry Brook’s 56. New Zealand replied with 113, with Robinson taking 5 for 39 to hand England a 27-run lead.
England then posted 226 in their second innings. Emilio Gay scored 57 and Jamie Smith added 39, helping the hosts set New Zealand a target of 254.
Nathan Smith was New Zealand’s most successful bowler in the second innings with 6 for 70, while Will O’Rourke and Matt Henry also claimed wickets.
The match was affected by rain, bad light and interruptions across four days, but England maintained control for long periods and sealed victory after taking the final five New Zealand wickets for 83 runs.
The result gives England a 1-0 lead in the Test series against New Zealand.
