Islamabad is set to receive free internet services at public places, but users will be required to verify their identity before logging on.
The National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC) has finalized the standards for providing free Wi-Fi, as the government pushes to complete the initiative at the earliest.
Under the new system, anyone wishing to use free public Wi-Fi will have to enter their name and mobile phone number. A digital log will also be maintained to record which user accessed the internet from which specific public location.
According to sources, the NTC has been instructed not only to provide the facility but also to ensure strict cyber-security measures to safeguard users and public networks.
Wi-Fi hotspots will be set up across major areas of the capital, including metro bus stations, central commercial districts, and other public spaces. To speed up the rollout, NTC has intensified work on the project and has already approached the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) along with other relevant departments for coordination and technical support.
Officials say the initiative aims to enhance digital accessibility for the public, but identity verification has been made mandatory to prevent misuse and to strengthen cybersecurity across public networks.
