Pakistan’s telecom sector is facing financial instability despite continuous growth in the number of mobile and broadband users.
A new three-year performance report by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) shows that industry revenues fell sharply to Rs 803 billion in 2024-25. The drop comes even as telecom subscriptions surpassed 202 million users.
According to the report, sector revenue declined from Rs 955 billion in 2023-24 to Rs 803 billion in 2024-25, marking a reduction of Rs 152 billion. The year before, in 2022-23, total revenue stood at Rs 817 billion, showing the sector’s fluctuating performance over the three-year period.
Officials attribute the decline to rising operational costs, heavy taxation, and investment challenges.
Telecom subscribers reach 202mln
Despite the drop in revenue, Pakistan’s telecom user base continues to expand. PTA reports that the number of telecom subscribers reached 202 million in 2024-25, reflecting steady growth in mobile penetration.
Teledensity has climbed to 81.21%, showing deeper connectivity across the country.
Broadband penetration hits 61%
The report notes that broadband services have recorded remarkable growth.
Over the last three years:
-
22 million new broadband users were added
-
Broadband penetration rose to nearly 61%
-
More than 5,000 new mobile service towers were installed across Pakistan
These additions indicate rising demand for fast, accessible internet despite the sector’s financial instability.
