The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a cybersecurity advisory urging citizens to strengthen their digital security practices in order to prevent cyber fraud and protect online accounts.
In its advisory, the regulator emphasized that enabling two-step verification (2FA) is essential for securing digital platforms, particularly social media, banking, and email accounts.
The PTA stressed that users should avoid using the same password across multiple accounts and instead create separate, strong, and unique passwords for each application.
Strong passwords key to digital safety
The authority stated that a strong password is “the guarantee of a secure digital future” and encouraged citizens to adopt safer online habits.
It warned that short and simple passwords significantly increase the risk of cyberattacks and data breaches. Users were also advised not to include personal information such as names, dates of birth, or phone numbers in passwords.
The PTA further cautioned against sharing passwords with anyone under any circumstances.
As part of its recommendations, the authority directed users to change their passwords regularly to minimize the risk of unauthorized access.
It also encouraged the use of biometric security features such as fingerprint scanning and facial recognition, where available, as an additional layer of protection.
Growing cyber threat concerns
The advisory comes amid rising concerns over cyber fraud, phishing attacks, and online identity theft in Pakistan and globally.
Digital security experts continue to warn that weak passwords remain one of the most common vulnerabilities exploited by hackers.
PTA said that public awareness is critical to strengthening national cybersecurity, urging citizens to take responsibility for protecting their personal data in an increasingly digital environment.
The authority reiterated that adopting basic cybersecurity practices can significantly reduce the risk of financial and personal data loss.
