The federal government has formally summoned the Pakistan Army to maintain security during the November 22- 24 by-elections, granting troops authority under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) inside the concerned constituencies.
The deployment will cover the by-elections scheduled in six national and seven provincial constituencies. Officials said the decision aims to ensure a peaceful voting process as political activity intensifies ahead of polling day.
According to the notification, military troops will be present from November 22 to November 24, providing security before, during, and immediately after polling. Troops will operate as part of the Reserve Force, supporting civil administration where needed.
Troops to exercise powers under anti-terrorism act
A key detail of the government’s order is the permission for army personnel to exercise powers under the Anti-Terrorism Act within the constituencies. This enables troops to act swiftly in case of threats, security breaches, or attempts to disrupt the electoral process.
Officials added that the Home Department and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will finalize the number of personnel required for each constituency.
Assessments will be based on local risk levels, past incidents, and logistical requirements.
