The city authorities and the public library in Chickasha, Oklahoma, have launched a programme that allows residents to donate food in order to clear or reduce traffic penalties and overdue library fines.
According to local sources, residents may submit non-perishable food items for the remainder of November and throughout December to obtain reductions in traffic tickets, municipal violations and library fees.
A municipal statement said the Food for Fines programme enables citizens to serve the community and obtain relief on penalties at the same time.
The municipal court announced the scheme until 26 November. Each food item carries a credit of 10 dollars, with a maximum reduction of 100 dollars.
Last year, 30 people took part and the value of donated food reached 2,826 dollars in penalty relief. Participants included individuals who donated more than required or who contributed solely out of public spirit.
