The Meteorological Department has denied reports circulating on social media claiming that the country is set to face its coldest winter in history.
The department clarified that such claims are baseless and contrary to scientific data, urging the public not to believe misinformation.
In an official statement, the Met Office said there are no signs of any record-breaking cold this season. Instead, the country is expected to experience a normal winter pattern with slightly lower-than-usual rainfall in most regions.
“The rumours about extreme cold weather are completely contrary to the facts,” the Met Department stated. “Citizens are advised to rely only on verified forecasts and visit our official website for accurate weather updates.”
Normal cold and below-average rainfall expected
According to the forecast, winter 2025 is expected to bring normal cold conditions, with temperatures staying within the typical seasonal range. While some northern areas may still experience chilly spells, overall rainfall is likely to remain below the long-term average, reducing the possibility of prolonged cold waves.
“We are expecting less precipitation than usual this winter, which means there will be fewer intense cold spells,” the statement noted.
Citizens urged to avoid misinformation
The Meteorological Department warned against false weather predictions and exaggerated claims spreading through social media, emphasizing that such reports create unnecessary panic among the public.
“Citizens should not listen to rumours,” the department said. “They should stay informed through our official sources to understand real meteorological conditions."
