Hollywood filmmaker Chris Columbus, best known for directing the first two Harry Potter films, has shut down speculation about a movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The director said the project is “impossible” given ongoing controversies surrounding JK Rowling and differing views within the original cast.
Speaking to The Times, Columbus revealed that he had once hoped to reunite Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint for the stage play’s big-screen adaptation. However, he admitted that “it’s gotten so complicated” to be connected with the Wizarding World without addressing Rowling’s stance on trans rights.
Cast reunion deemed impossible
The director made it clear that fans should not expect the original cast to return together.
“It’s never going to happen,” Columbus said. “Everyone in the cast has their own opinion, which is different from her opinion, which makes it impossible.”
He added that while he has not spoken to JK Rowling in over a decade, he remains close with Daniel Radcliffe and continues to have strong ties with the main cast members.
Cursed Child story background
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, set two decades after Deathly Hallows, follows Harry’s son, Albus Potter, and Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius, as they navigate friendship and dark challenges. Despite its success on Broadway and London’s West End, the play will not be adapted into a film under Columbus’s direction.
With the director’s confirmation, hopes for an on-screen continuation of Harry Potter’s story through The Cursed Child have officially been put to rest. For now, fans will have to revisit the original eight films or catch the play on stage.
