The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has received a request from NESPAK to install a telemetry system at Kotri Barrage to monitor inflows and outflows of water.
According to a letter sent by the Chief Engineer Indus at NESPAK, the company has sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) from IRSA for the installation. IRSA has already approved similar systems for Sukkur and Guddu barrages.
The letter states that NESPAK has so far installed telemetry systems at 27 sites across Sindh and Punjab. The IRSA meeting record mentions June 30, 2026, as the deadline for full installation.
However, the process has faced hurdles at Sukkur and Guddu due to ongoing repair and construction works. IRSA noted that telemetry systems cannot be installed until these works are completed.
Meanwhile, the Sindh Irrigation Department revealed that 10 gates of Sukkur Barrage have remained closed since 1939. It added that foreign experts have been engaged to open or replace the non-functional gates.
