The 80th Annual Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is set to become a major diplomatic stage, as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will both address the high-level debate on September 26.
Rare face-off at UNGA
For years, India has been represented by its foreign minister at the UNGA debate. However, this year, Prime Minister Modi himself will lead the Indian side, a move that signals the importance New Delhi places on this year’s session. According to the UN’s provisional schedule, Pakistan’s turn will follow India’s, giving Islamabad a strategic opportunity to respond directly to Delhi’s stance.
Pakistan’s diplomatic strategy
Diplomatic sources confirmed that Pakistan intends to highlight key issues, including Kashmir, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and regional peace, during its address. This sequencing allows Pakistan to counter India’s position immediately, while India is expected to exercise its Right of Reply in response. Pakistan’s Saima Saleem will present Islamabad’s official rebuttal if required.
High-level Pakistani delegation
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will lead Pakistan’s delegation, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Advisor to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi. Officials say the event will be one of the most significant diplomatic gatherings in recent years, given ongoing crises such as the Israel-Iran conflict over Gaza, the Ukraine war, and heightened Pak-India tensions.

US mediation and global spotlight
Sources suggest the United States may also attempt quiet backdoor diplomacy between Pakistan and India on the sidelines of the UNGA session. With both South Asian rivals present at the same high-level platform, observers believe Washington could push for dialogue to ease regional tensions.
Other key UNGA events
The 80th session officially opens on September 9, 2025, with the general debate scheduled from September 23 to 29. A climate-related event will be held on September 24, while September 26 will also feature a high-level meeting to mark the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
