Independence Day celebrations in various parts of Karachi turned tragic when aerial firing claimed the lives of three people, including an 8-year-old girl, and left 84 others injured, among them women and children.
Rescue officials said 8-year-old Marha was standing by a window when a stray bullet struck her in the head. She was a first-grade student. Two other people were killed in separate firing incidents in Korangi and Lyari’s Agra Taj area.
The injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed, Civil, and Jinnah hospitals for treatment. Police launched operations in different areas, arresting 20 suspects involved in aerial firing and seizing weapons from their possession.
Avoid aerial firing on Independence Day: Sindh IG
Inspector General of Sindh Police Ghulam Nabi Memon has taken notice of the recent aerial firing incidents in Karachi, expressing deep regret over the loss of precious lives.
“Aerial firing is not the purpose of Independence Day celebrations, and it should be avoided,” he said, adding that police are taking action in accordance with the law.
According to the IG, police have arrested 57 people and seized an equal number of weapons. Cases have been registered against the suspects under attempted murder charges, and they will face legal proceedings.
