Security forces have launched an operation against nearly 800 militants in Bajaur district, home to a population of around 300,000, prompting the displacement of more than 40,000 local residents.
According to official sources, a peace jirga between local elders and militants failed after the jirga demanded that the militants vacate the area along with two other key conditions.
Authorities confirmed that about 300 militants are present in two areas of Mamond tehsil, while over 350 militants are active in Khyber.
More than 80 percent of them are Afghan nationals.
Commissioner Malakand Division Abid Wazir said arrangements for the accommodation of the displaced have been completed.
A total of 107 government buildings in Khar are being used to house the affected families, while a tent village is being set up at Khar Sports Complex.
